Everything is Illuminated: Review

This is a very very touching and beautiful piece of cinema meant only for the extremely patient. I had to see it 2 times to actually fall in love with it!

The story follows Jonathan Safran (expertly potrayed by Elijah Wood), a young Ukranian American who collects everything from false teeth to dirt in little plastic bags. He does seem a little crazy but apparently the guy does crazy stuff like that because he is afraid he’ll forget stuff and desperately holds on to the past. Anyway, on her death bed, his grandmother gives him a photograph of his late Grandfather (a Jew) and a beautiful woman who saved him from the Nazis.

He goes on a search for this mysterious woman with the help of a Ukranian transalator (who loves Shaquille O’Neal and Michael jackson), his Grandfather (who thinks he’s blind) and a dog named Sammy davis Jr known throughout the movie as a ‘seeing eye bitch’! The direction (by Liev Schreiber) is excellent in every possible way you can imagine. Every single scene is simply beautiful and the Russian (the flick was shot here) landscape is shown in all it’s grandeur! The music is…well…a bit wierd and I’m assuming it’s folk music regional to Ukraine or someplace.

In every road movie, you go expecting comic situations and redemption but this one gives that and some more, with a touch of grace.

Acting is pretty good and Elijah Wood never ceases to amaze. LOTR, Sin City, Eternal Sunshine and now this!

The overall theme is very morbid but nonetheless it is pretty humorous. This is definetly one of my favourite road trip flicks but then again, this movie will only be appreciated by people who have actually sat through Schindler’s List, Life is Beautiful and the likes.
